FLIGHT OF DANCE #2: 4 CLASSES, 4 INSTRUCTORS

JOIN US FOR THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF OUR FLIGHT OF DANCE SERIES LED BY A ROTATING GROUP OF DYNAMIC TEACHING ARTISTS. EACH TEACHER WILL OFFER A DIFFERENT STYLE AND VARIATION OF MOVEMENT PRACTICE. THE SERIES WILL BE OFFERED AS A 4-WEEK COMMITMENT CONSISTING OF 90 MINUTE CLASSES WITH AN OPTIONAL 30 MINUTES OF COOL DOWN/CONVERSATION. OUR GOAL IS TO MOVE OUR BODIES TOGETHER, LEARN FROM EACH OTHER, GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER, AND HAVE FUN.

This class coheres around the concept of surfaces. We approach surfaces as new ways to frame being in relationship with our own sensations and the material realities of the world. We will play with untapped bodily surfaces to open up easeful movement pathways. This class embraces each body’s inherent knowledge and patterns as vibrant sources to move from for momentum, flow, impulse, and vigor. We will begin by deepening sensation-based awareness then move through floor-based exercises and a longer movement phrase. We then turn to more externally relational spaces and play with holding higher attention to other movers in the room and the architectural offerings of Dekum Street Theater.

Now in the 40th year of my love affair with dance, I am currently enjoying thinking about and exploring desire - sensing how my body desires to move (soma), noticing how desire takes me into motion (action), playing with how desire shapes my choices (improvisation), and allowing desire to drive my use of time and weight (composition). This will be our field of attention in this short encounter - personal and collective desire in action, in motion, together and separately. As to process, we will prime the body to make the broadest range of choices possible, learn some material as common ground, and then play with the mash up of the material, your desire, and the room. Individual agency inside the shared community of dancing with others - truly one of the greatest joys in life.

entropeace: a movement and performance class for all types of artists at all levels. through individual and group guided practices we will explore finding solace, decision making, and clarity in the chaos and unknown of improvising, moving, and emoting in front of others. some ideas we might get to: reducing anxiety and rushing when and leading up to performing, accessing deep emotional spaces and states while manipulating circumstances, multi-performing, playing with self/audience/others, performing critique, under/over-whelm, explorations of space/time, sincerity yet unserious...this experience will be facilitated by keyon gaskin a movement and performance artist who's taught and performed internationally for over a decade.

This class will begin with an invitation into somatic inquiry. Through imagination and sensation we will warm up and locate ourselves. The middle of class will be a movement game that invites noticing and challenging our own coordination, as well as coming into relationship with others. Class will finalize with a movement phrase that emphasizes kinetic energy- how do we shape/craft/hone what is already in motion to make a dance? All levels and movement experiences are welcome.
